Human Design and Passenger Consciousness: Becoming the Witness

What does it mean to trust life?

I use the words “trust life” as a mantra, to remind myself to breathe and relax. To settle into my being in the most grounded way possible, whenever I begin to feel insecure.

There are many times when I am holding space for unanswered questions or awaiting the outcome of a situation. It’s in these times that I observe my mind struggling to come up with a solution…right now! My mind is very impatient when it comes to these scenarios in life, where the future seems uncertain.

The truth is the future is always uncertain. We are not promised a tomorrow. So in reality we are doing a great deal of trusting life, each and every day, as we plan for the future.

It’s only when life throws us a little twist and things don’t go as planned that we have a tendency to panic. I think most people can recognize that this can happen to them from time to time. For others, they may notice that they experience these feelings often. Either way, my point is – this is natural.

It’s natural for our minds to panic when the outcome is not clear. This is when I use my breath to slow down my physiological reactions and to lessen the power of these nervous thoughts.

It is a waking meditation to stay aware enough of my own thoughts and to notice when this begins to happen. By observing them, they lose their ability to drive me to unconscious actions.

The breath is an incredible tool to help keep the mind in its rightful place in our life, which is to weight and balance the options. To define things and be inspirited. To contemplate, and yes, to seek solutions. However, it is no longer the mind’s job to make decisions for us. The wisdom of the body guides our decision-making process, as we evolve as a species. We are gaining emotional awareness through the development of the emotional solar plexus. Our body is leading the way, through feelings and sensations, when the mind can now simply observe and enjoy the show.

In Human Design, we call this “passenger consciousness”. Many philosophies and spiritual practices have spoken of this for ages. Becoming the witness.

It all begins with the breath, and slowing down enough to get in touch with the wisdom of the body. We learn to recognize the cues and truly trust that life will guide us the right way.

Life, as I see it, is both an internal and external experience, happening simultaneously. As we recognize this, we can begin to fine-tune our individual life path. By noticing the sign posts, internally and externally, as we move through our day. Learning to differentiate between the mind and the body is key.

If we are stuck in our heads, pushing our body to do things it doesn’t feel like doing, we are most likely going to meet resistance. Internally – by not feeling great. And/or externally – by getting feedback from life experiences in the form of situations not working out. People will give you energetic, and possibly verbal, feedback because we are forcing things. Or you may simply run into delays or be missing an important piece of the puzzle. This makes moving forward difficult.

There is an endless amount of ways that resistance can show up. Your feelings and sensations in the body are your best guides.
